Opening new gymnastics hall at Topsportcentrum Rotterdam

On September 4, 2021, Rotterdam sports alderman Sven de Langen opened a new gymnastics hall at Topsportcentrum Rotterdam. Since this week, this unique training and competition hall has been home to the TeamNL top sports program in men’s gymnastics.

The arrival of the TeamNL top sports program in men’s gymnastics in Rotterdam came about in cooperation with the Royal Dutch Gymnastics Union (KNGU), NOC*NSF, Topsport Metropool, municipality of Rotterdam and Rotterdam Topsport.

“It is great to welcome this first TeamNL top sports program to Rotterdam,” said Sven de Langen, alderman for public health, care, the elderly and sports. “We have all worked hard on this and I am proud that it has succeeded.”

There are now four locations in the Netherlands with a top sports program in gymnastics. Rotterdam is the new training center for a total of five top gymnasts from the Southwest Netherlands region, the best known of whom is Rotterdam’s Bart Deurloo (last month’s Olympic finalist on the horizontal bar in Tokyo), and a group of upcoming juniors preparing for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

“Together with the KNGU, which owns the top sports program, NOC*NSF and the municipality of Rotterdam, we have realized a gymnastics hall that is unique in the Netherlands,” says Peter Blangé, director of Rotterdam Topsport. “It is a training and competition hall, with state-of-the-art equipment, facilities and tools.” There are 12SPRINGS Airmaterials in the hall, which people enjoy practicing on. There is also women’s equipment, making the hall more versatile. Rotterdam gymnastics clubs can use the hall on free hours for their own training and club and regional competitions. European Championship and World Cup qualification competitions will also be held there. The hall has permanent stands with more than 700 seats.
